Corey Anderson: What did Anthony Smith do to get the title shot over me?

Friday, January 11, 2019

To close the calendar year, Corey Anderson picked up a dominant win at UFC 232 over top 5 contender Ilir Latifi. The win prompted some to call for a title shot for Anderson, who advanced his win streak to three, including wins over Glover Teixeira and Patrick Cummins. Among those who considered Anderson to be a viable contender for the belt was newly crowned champion Jon Jones, who sent some trash talk Anderson’s way.

However, the talk didn’t last long, as Anderson’s spot on the marquee was quickly taken by Anthony Smith, at UFC 235. The choice surprised Anderson.

“I was in Vegas for the whole week,” he said on the Top Turtle MMA Podcast on FloCombat. “I got back here and it was announced they were going with Anthony Smith.”

In addition to the fight coming together suddenly, it also surprised him due to Smith’s resume.

“He hasn’t really done much,” Anderson stated. “The guys he fought - it wasn’t like they were top tier other than Volkan [Oezdemir].”

Even that match with Oezdemir did little to impress Anderson.

“He was a punching bag until Volkan got tired,” Anderson points out.

Although Anderson is upset that the shot didn’t go to him, it does allow him some much needed time off to tend to the birth of his first child - his wife is due on March 12th. And while he doesn’t see much of a path to victory for Smith, it is MMA and anything can happen.

“I don’t think he’s going to fair too well against Jones, but it’s an opportunity - he got it,” he said. “Anything can happen.”
